just remember that drugs do come with a risk and if you do go natural, you really need to have your mind firmly made before going into labor. (it really makes it easier if you do!)
Panicing doesn't help AT ALL. Becky, you are awesome! You've done this before. You know you can do it again! (And I'm praying for a quicky baby for you. Then you don't have to bother with choices like whether or not to get drugs! :)
If you tend to have short labors, then try all natural. If you tend to take a while, sometimes the drugs help you keep the strength you need to push effectively. Good luck! I'll say an extra prayer for you and your baby! :o)
I delivered Graeden at Valley General. I had committed to going drug-free. Then the nurse saw me puke every 10 minutes and tried to get me to take an anti barf drug. She didn't know what the side effects were and I refused. She pushed. Tymon got upset and told her to quit offering drugs and go back and read the birth plan. Yay! Anyway, like Sarah said, decide now. And then stick to it.
If you want encouragement: go drug-free. You CAN do it. Women have been doing it drug free since the beginning of time. I've done 4 without drugs. You can work through the pain. I understand healing is faster with no drugs and your chances for prolonged labor or c-section decrease substantially.
With your history, going VBAC is going to be painful. Your uterus has been cut twice and that makes the risks and the pain 2-fold. Don't go in with any set plan and if it gets to be to much, get the meds. The important thing is to listen to your body. Another thing is that epidurals do tend to relax you(by taking the pain away)so labor tends to go faster.(Trust me I have heard ALL about this from the "expert")And if you have any questions orconcerns, email me. Brett has seen both sides of the argument and can medicaly tell you the pros and cons.
Everyone experience is TOTALLY different...but we are so grateful we had a natural labor. It was amazing...and challenging on every level. We will totally do it again. Either way, just follow your instincts. That is all I have really learned from my experiences as a new mom....as if I should be telling you this! You are much more experienced than me! I would love to chat soon! Call me!!
I've done it both ways. IMHO, there are benefits to going drug-free and benefits going with an epi. I have never had any problems with an epidural, and my kids turned out fine. ;o) (Ironically, the one that was delivered drug-free was the one with serious issues and had to be hospitalized) For me, just knowing ahead of time that I can get (am allowing myself) to get an epi if I want makes all the difference. Go in with an open mind and see how your labor goes! Hopefully it will be short and quick and then it doesn't matter! (That's what I always hope for, anyway!) Good luck! I'll be in your shoes in a few weeks!
